What did you hear/see/read first?

How did you get hooked?

My father used to read me Poe's novels when I was very young... I was enchanted by the tone of his voice creating mistery and suspance... I never left Poe's works... I can say that he's not my favourite writer... he is a part of me...

If I have to rimind the first novel that hooked me stronger I can say it was "The Tell-Tale Heart"... when I was very very young, before sleeping, I used to love hearing about the door slowly opening... my heart was a train in that situation... but I was not frightened... I was excited... that were the moments I felt alive... (even "The Oval Portrait" was one of my favourites)

I think it was The Gold Bug. Also it had one of my very first mystery solving character in it.
By the way Leonardi's father stole my dream with my son:)

My middle-school English teacher played a tape recording of "The Raven". I still remember hearing the voice that kept saying "Nevermore, Nevermore".

My first approach at Poe was in my first year in secondary school and through the perseverance of my Spanish teacher-whom I will always be thanking for- via the Cortazar's translation of his classic short stories, the first of which I read . was "The Mask of the Red Death". I got so impressed and marvelled about it that on the one hand that same night I couldn't sleep without reading the rest of the book it was included in, and, on the other, many years after that, the first thing I bought with my first salary was the Complete and Unabridged Works of this master.

I read "The Fall of the house of Usher" in 11 grade in high school and "The Raven" that's how I fell in love with my dear Poe. :)

When I was like 13 or something I read Masque Of The Read Death in spanish, which I quite liked but not enough to pursue the author. Fast forward to when I was 16, I read Lenore, loved it, saw it was by the same guy that had written Mask, re-read that one in english, and then read everything else.

I was about twelve years old or so when I fist read "Alone".
I loved it, so I looked further into Edgar Allan Poe. He has been my favorite author ever since. My personal favorite is "Al-Aaraaf", and it has been for years now.

I had read various stories of his throughout my childhood, but my real love and appreciation for Poe came when I was in highschool and I fell in love with his poetry, specifically "A Dream Within A Dream", which I memorized in a couple hours and can still recite that on command, probably in my sleep as well, to this day. After that I had to read more and the more I read, the more I loved.

I bought a collection of horror stories by chance, and one of them is Poe's "The Black Cat."

Rather peculiar but it was "Annabel Lee" in my case. Everything else followed later and for quite a while I was actually living on it :)
