Grand Opening! Lyon Air Museum

For the first time since 1985 when “Movieland of the Air” closed down, John Wayne airport in Orange County, California has a world-class air museum. Today marked the Grand Opening of the Lyon Air Museum; an airy 30,000 sq ft. facility that broke ground in 2007. Maj. Gen. William... Lyon, USAF (Ret.) is former Chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve and is a decorated ex-military pilot, having flown missions in WW II and Korea. He is also the CEO and Chairman of William Lyon Homes, Inc. – one of the nation’s largest private homebuilders.
Lyon envisions the museum as, “A world-class facility that will be available to the local community and will offer interactive exhibits that inspire young people.” Docent-led tours walk through the history of some amazing aircraft currently on display, including a still-flying Boeing B-17 “Fuddy Duddy,” a DC-3 and converted C-47, a meticulously-polished B-25 and superb Douglas A-26. The displays include various WWII-era automobiles and other artifacts. The museum’s huge glass doors and gleaming white floor give the space an open, breathy feeling; perfect for taking in these rare aircraft. More aircraft are planned for the future.
