löyly, 2009 "Löyly", from the same Proto-Finno-Ugric lewl (spirit, soul) as Estonian leil and Hungarian lélek (ghost). 1- The steam and the associated heat in a sauna, generated by administering water on the hot stones placed on top of a sauna stove (kiuas). 2- The act... of taking a sauna bath or the bath oneself. 3- (figuratively) Heat, pressure, intensity; lisätä ~ä (+ illative) to pour oil on something (figuratively) 4- (obsolete) Ghost, Spirit. In the finnish language, this word describes the healthy smoke resulting from the transformation of matter, allegoric of the mutation of gender. the series displays unvegetated landscapes, where everything looks asphyxiated by an environment troubled in its ecosystem, since the beginning of the nuclear age. haze, blur and smoke stand for the rhethoric of the gender trouble (judith butler, 1989), embodied by portraits of genderless, or perhaps transgendered characters. these opaque atmospheres point out to dissolved identities, transitioning bodies and the indeterminacy of identity, in a collapsing post-modern world in which the sense of things is decaying. © http://www.dorotheesmith.net 2009

loon, 2008 these images are extracted from an 8-minutes diaporama entitled «loon» made to be projected in a theatre and featuring a sountrack by alva noto & ryuichi sakamoto, taken from the album vrioon (raster noton, 2002). freely inspired by jean-jacques rousseau's ...rêveries d'un promeneur solitaire (1778), this series tries to transcribe a photographic walk accross the ghostly french city of Loon, at the bank of the north sea. some faceless androgynious portraits slip in the wake of enigmatic landscapes, interrogating the impossible determination of a still identity. this series aspires to unveil the elusive relationship between the individual and the world in which identities are disolved, derepresentating their breathes' ebb and flow. the full series can be viewed on the website ; © dorotheesmith.net 2009

spree, 2008 these images are extracted from an 8-minutes diaporama entitled «spree» made to be projected in a theater and featuring a soundtrack by the german band einstürzende neubauten, taken from the album ende neu (1996). opening on an exhaustion, displaying image...s of a nature always-already tracked and of worn-out, strip-minded characters, this series called spree tends to illustrate the experience of a complete breathlesness, and the feeling of running out of steam. disparating humongous figures such as dinosaurs or jesus christ himself, theseimages also depict the drawn-out down-fall of the latent, burdensome authority discourse. through the provocating fadeur of its tones, and the constant indetermination which characterizes its subjects, spree may echoe paul verlaine's romances sans paroles aesthetics. © http://www.dorotheesmith.net 2009
