Opening Reception:

WHITE HOT Market:
Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Vancouver-based Kelly Lycan's practice looks at the way objects are valued and devalued dependent upon their place and display. As a monochromatic installation and ph...oto-based exhibition of recycled objects and re-visioned collections, WHITE HOT looks at this idea of value and the relationships between market culture and visual culture. Throughout the course of the exhibition, using a range of display and representational strategies, Lycan will be restyling the installation of objects borrowed, scavenged and created by both Lycan and other invited artists. In residence for the duration of the project, as a performative gesture, Lycan manages the WHITE HOT flea market every Saturday at the gallery. Shopping is encouraged.

Kelly Lycan received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and her MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in Canada and the US, most recently at CSA Gallery in Vancouver. She is also a member of Instant Coffee, a service oriented artist collective that builds social structures, where ideas, materials and actions are explored. Instant Coffee has exhibited in Canada, South America, Europe and the USA.

Cyprien Gaillard
Real Remnants of Fictive Wars V, 2004
Video, 7:15 minutes

Cyprien Gaillard
Desniansky Raion, 2007
Video, 29 minutes

'One must ruin a palace to make it an object of interest.'
Denis Diderot

"Real Remnants of Fictive Wars V" (2004) is part of a larger series of “land art” videos in which Gaillard activates indus...trial fire extinguishers in carefully chosen landscapes. Each work documents a performative vandalism to a different site, releasing a thick white powder that creates a vaporous cloud as well as a veiled threat.

"Desniansky Raion" (2007) alternates between order and chaos, registering the existence, decay, and demolition of modernist and brutalist buildings and housing projects. Questioning man's traces in nature in an iconoclastic way, Gaillard juxtaposes a range of aesthetic gestures from vandalism to minimalism, romanticism and Land Art.

Cyprien Gaillard was born in Paris, France in 1980 where he lives and works. He has upcoming solo shows at MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y Leon and Frac Champagne Ardenne, Reims. His past exhibitions include the Museum Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany; the Hayward Gallery Project Space, London, England; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; and L’Atelier du Jeu de Paume, Paris. He is presently in the exhibition "Younger Than Jesus", New Museum, New York. He has also participated in numerous group shows including the "5th Berlin Biennale", Berlin, Germany; "The Collection One" at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; and the 2007 Biennale d'art Contemporain de Lyon, Lyon, France.

Organized by Kathrin Meyer and Tim Saltarelli

May 8 to June 13, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, May 8, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

"In May (After October)" takes its title from two revolutionary moments in Western history, the Russian October Revolution of 1917 and the French student protests of May 1968. Importantly, it also make...s reference to the social and political change that many hope will follow from the recent American Presidential election. This widespread call for ongoing change provides a platform for a consideration of the political currency of aesthetic practice. In particular, this exhibition focuses on photographic images, videos and films all working to articulate a productive refusal. From virtual abstraction to appropriated archival images and experiments with narrative structure, this international group of artists moves beyond creating easily consumed and didactic depictions. Together their works raise questions, asking how we can find new ways to say ‘no’ and form suggestions for alternatives, both politically and aesthetically.

Incorporating... electronic music, performance, drawing, and both live and pre-recorded video, "In the Room 3" weaves in and out of a dream-like state of memory and imagination, operating in a world that subscribes to its own internal rhythm and logic. Here seemingly simple actions take on magical qualities: ping pong balls are dropped into a glass vase to reveal a drawing at its base; a wall of coloured tissue paper rustles with the wind from a body walking past; a man draws faces with marker and spit as his intimate images are simultaneously projected into the center of a room; he tells a strange story:

I see a girl's profile, and from far away, it looks like she is wearing a beautiful pearl tiara. So I go up to her and ask her, and ask her, “Where'd you get that tiara?” And I realize that it is not a tiara, but her eyes, all connected, all around her head; and when she's sad she cries from one of her eyes, and when she's very sad she cries from all of her eyes, making herself very wet.

The visual, textual and sonic storytelling that makes up "In the Room 3" grows out of an ongoing exchange between Sung Hwan Kim and dogr, whose collaborative practice moves across disciplines to create its unique form and structure.

Korean artist Sung Hwan Kim is currently based in New York. Previous to this, he lived and worked in the Netherlands over a period of four years, during which time he was fellow at the Rijksakademie. His "In the Room" series was developed in the Netherlands and has been exhibited and performed at STEIM and Witte de With. In 2007 he was awarded the 2nd prize of the prestigious Prix de Rome for contemporary Dutch artists and the Korean award Hermes Korea Missulsang (Hermes Korea Prize for Contemporary Art).

dogr (David Michael DiGregorio) was born in Boston in 1979 and is now based in New York. With a background in Baroque, choral gospel and electro-acoustic music, as well as experimental 16mm filmmaking, dogr is a performing musician and composer who sings layered and spatial songs. His upcoming album, "In Korean Wilds and Villages", is due for release on Sonig Records, Germany, April 2009. Recent performances include Établissement d'en face projects, Brussel, 2009; Insa Art Space, Seoul, 2007; Gallery 27, Uiwang, Korea, 2007; De Appel, Amsterdam, 2007; STEIM, Amsterdam, 2006; BAK, Utrecht, 2006. Byungjun Kwon started his musical career in early the 90s as a singer/songwriter and has released seven albums ranging from alternative rock to minimal house. He creates music for records, sound tracks, fashion collections, contemporary dance, theatre plays and interdisciplinary events. Recent works and performances have been presented in many international venues. He lives and works in Amsterdam.

"In the Room 3" is presented in conjunction with Sung Hwan Kim's exhibition "In the Room" which will be on view at Gallery TPW from April 7 to May 2, 2009.

February 25 – March 21, 2009

Opening reception:
Wednesday, February 25, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

A North American premiere, German artist Nina Könnemann visits the British sea towns of Southport and Blackpool for this new animation and documentary video installation. With their basic fair attractions, these outdated holiday town...s become the perfect sets for Könnemann’s ongoing investigation into everyday situations veering out of control, where social performance collapses and produces cycles of dysfunction. As with much of recent German cinema, reality slips away under close inspection, or rather behaves like one of the still intoxicated strangers in Könnemann films, who linger around randomly after the event is long over.

About the Artist
Based in Berlin, Könnemann’s work has been widely screened and exhibited and is gaining international visibility. Recent and upcoming solo exhibition venues include Grazer Kunstverein, Austria (2007), White Space, Zurich (2008), and Portikus, Frankfurt (2009). Her work was included in the group exhibitions 40 Jahre Videokunst, ZKM, Karlsruhe (2006) and Von Abts bis Zmijewski, Pinakothek der Moderne München (2007).

Programmed by Oliver Husain, Nina Könnemann "2008/2009" is a co-presentation coinciding with Cinematheque Ontario’s focus on recent German cinema, "STATES OF LONGING: Films from the Berlin School", taking place from February 20 through March 14, 2009. www.cinemathequeontario.ca
