In his work Robert Frank (American, born in Switzerland in 1924) has developed a dialogue between photography and poetry, literature and painting, and created a language that... both conveys subjective experience and continues the heritage of documentary photography.
One of the highlights of his abundant production of photographs and films is a legendary book of photographs, The Americans (published in France in 1958). In the early 1950s, when living in New York, Frank also produced a series of images of Paris, his vision sharpened by his distance from Europe.
This exhibition proposes a dialogue between a selection of photographs of Paris, chosen by Robert Frank and Ute Eskildsen (presented at the Museum Folkwang in Essen) and the complete ensemble of photographs from The Americans, loaned for the occasion by the Maison Européenne deLire la suite

Au tout début des années 1950, alors qu’il était déjà installé à New York, il a réalisé des images de Paris avec un œil aiguisé par son éloignement.
L’exposition propose un dialogue entre la sélection de photographies de Paris, choisies par Robert Frank et Ute Eskildsen (présentées au Museum Folkwang de Essen) et l’intégralité des photographies du livre Les Américains, prêtées pour l’occasion par la Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris).
Au sein de l'exposition, seront présentés le premier film de Robert Frank, Pull My Daisy (1959) et son dernier film True Story (2004). La majeure partie de ses films sera également programmée à l'auditorium pendant toute la durée de l'exposition.
Commissariat : Ute Eskildsen, conservatrice du département de la photographie du Museum Folkwang et Marta Gili, directrice du Jeu de Paume.

Join a generation in celebrating the opening of On the Road at the IMA with a concert from David Amram. In 1957's New York, writer Jack Kerouac and musician/composer David Amram helped usher in the Beat Generation with jazz/poetry readings in Greenwich Village. The two collaborated for the rest of Kerouac’s life. Amram... comes to "Naptown" to play songs in Kerouac’s honor. Catch the sounds of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, the Amram-composed score to the film Pull My Daisy, and other selections influenced by Kerouac’s diverse cultural taste. Amram is a composer and conductor who has collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, Dizzy Gillespie, Hunter S. Thompson, Willie Nelson and many more. He is also the author of the memoir Offbeat: Collaborating With Kerouac (2002). Local musicians jam with Amram for this musical tribute to Kerouac’s spirit!

The IMA will reunite two of the iconic members of the American anti-establishment "Beat Generation" of the 1950s, novelist Jack Kerouac and photographer Robert Frank. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the 120-foot-long original typescript for Kerouac’s 1957 cross-country odyssey, On the Road, owned by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. The manuscript, 84 feet of which will be on display, will be accompanied by 83 photographs taken by Robert Frank during his own two-year cross-country pilgrimage and published first in Europe in 1958 as Les Americains. The IMA will borrow the almost singular complete set of Frank’s photographs owned by the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts.June 26-September 21, 2008
