One of the most famous modern composers, Shostakovich was a Soviet composer who lived and composed through difficult times. His music is seen as being borderline grotesque. He composed a wide variety of music, from jazz to classical, but he is most known for his symphonies (esp. Symphonies no. 5 and 7).
