Change for Burma! MP responses

In September, we asked you to email your MP using our online campaign action to encourage the UN Security Council to bring the regime before the International Criminal Court and to impose a universal arms embargo.

Change for Burma! News from Burma

Unfortunately, we have received reports about more arrests in Burma. Over 80 democracy campaigners, including a poet, a blogger and several Buddhist monks, have been jailed in the past couple of weeks. At least 23 dissidents have been sentenced to 65 years in prison for their involvement in the peaceful ...demonstrations in Burma in September 2007.

Many of the activists arrested are members of the 88 Generation Students Group, including Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi, Nilar Thein and her husband Jimmy. The 88 Generation Students Group is a group campaigning for democracy in Burma that takes its name from the student uprising in 1998 in Rangoon in which troops opened fire on and killed thousands of the protesters.

Those arrested face 21 charges, and their trials continue, meaning that they could ultimately face prison sentences of up to 159 years.

Change for Burma! What can I do?

On 1 December 2008, there will be an EU-China summit in Lyons, France. This meeting is an ideal opportunity for the EU to raise awareness of the fact that the Chinese government currently supports the brutal Burmese regime. According to the Council of the European Union, “The summit should allow the EU-Ch...ina dialogue to be strengthened in all respects. The EU and China will also work together to provide solutions to the regional and international crises of common interest (including Burma/Myanmar, North Korea, Sudan and Iran).”

Please help us ensure that China’s support of the Burmese regime is addressed in December. Email your MEP today, urging them to ask the EU to make China’s relationship with Burma a key aspect of summit discussions.
