I was reading the link below about Pedro Mendoza visiting his family after thirty years. I am happy to report that my host family, the Handels in Shafter, CA, are still as close as family 32 years after I arrived. I was a German exchange student at Shafter High School in 1977/78. My sister was a YFU exchange student in... 1973/74, and my cousin't daughter, Mara, is currently in Texas with YFU. I have been to every reunion my class has had and - more importantly - was there as my host mom, Mickey, lay dying after a prolonged illness. I was even listed in the obituary as a daughter. Having said that, I think I had the most life-changing experience a young person could have during my exchange year. I loved it so much that I married an American and have lived in the US for 20 years now. Attached is a photo of our most recent reunion (last September for my 30th high school reunion). My parents from Germany are also on there. My host dad has since remarried, and I love his new wife. My host family also showed up (including all my siblings!) at my daughter's wedding in Phoenix in 2007. Amazing love!
