Virginia Spine Institute Snow is expected this weekend. If you are out shoveling snow protect your spine by following these simple tips:

• Warm up by walking for a few minutes or marching in place. Stretch the muscles in your back to enhance blood flow and nutrition to your spine, thereby, helping to prevent injury.

• Start shoveling soon after... the snow falls so the task will be easier. As snow sits it becomes denser and heavier to shovel. Shovel thick snow in thin layers of about 3-4 inches.

• Always lift with your legs and not your back.• When you throw a shovel full of snow, always step into the direction of the throw. Do not make any twisting motions as you dump snow.

• Remember to stay hydrated and take breaks every 15 minutes.
