The J. Peterman Company was founded in 1987 by John H. Peterman. The company’s first product was an original horseman’s duster, promoted with a small ad in The New Yorker. The company grew by offering distinctive, original lifestyle merchandise within catalogs that broke all the rules of direct marketing at the time.
